After finishing 2nd in the country in 2003, uncle had a recovery of sorts in 2004. Coach Kyle Ryan took the head strength and conditioning coach at UNC and this position didnt give him time to coach Rugby. UNCRFC also took a trip to Las Vegas for the tournament sin City UNCRFC went 2-1 beating Utah valley, Occidental College let a lead slip away in Los Angeles. How is he going to do in the spring, University of Wyoming coach rich Cortez, kindly accompanied the club and filled in as head coach.
In the spring there was a decline in numbers, but also new players. Weekend 2 and 3 April, UNCRFC traveled to Dallas, Texas for the 2004 West Rugby football Union College Championships. Originally from England, coach Smith was the missing piece of the puzzle. With a full time coach came to a sense of legitimacy and this secured commitments from players who were on the fence. With some talented new players and some experienced seniors, uncs national title as started.
