★ Rugby union in the Scottish Borders

Rugby union in the Scottish Borders has a long, and significant history.

The region is responsible for several major innovations, and a presence in the national game, which is disproportionately large, because this is one part of Scotland where Rugby is the main sport and played by all classes.

1. History. (История)

For centuries the Borderers were playing various forms of folk football that was very similar to Rugby. Some of them still play very rarely, such as the game in Jedburgh. Undoubtedly, their popularity paved the way for Rugby. Ned Haig, for example, played Fasterns eve BA.

During the mid-late 1870s years nearly parallel world club Rugby has grown in the Scottish borders. This brand of Rugby, imported from Yorkshire, via the burgeoning wool industry, was the world of the refined boys scheme in Edinburgh and Glasgow. The borders remains the only part of Scotland the predominantly middle class atmosphere of the Edinburgh elite – Rugby, where really managed to take root in Scotland. In small towns, where little or no football associations, clubs such as Gala, Hawick, Selkirk, jed forest, and Melrose, soon became the sports for resilient farming communities nearby.

Although the population within the limits of 100.000, its unique cauldron of competition and has produced some of the best players to come out of Scotland, or even of European Rugby. Many of the greatest Scottish sides, including those who won the Grand slam in 1990, contains a significant number of residents of the border strip. It says a lot for the quality of the game is that towns, of which the three most stable clubs in Scotland come from Hawick, Galashiels and Melrose – the population 14.800, 12.300 and 1670, respectively.

2. Borders rugby. (Границы регби)

Area Rugby borders largely share a border with the Scottish borders region, but also taking in langholm and Biggar.

Although the major part of the border Rugby can be found in the area of middle and lower Tweedsdale, borders Rugby region also takes in such town langem in Dumfriesshire in the South-West, and Peebles, innerleithen and Biggar traditionally part of South Lanarkshire in the West. Berwick-upon-tweed also has a strong Association with the region and its Rugby club often played against sides in the area.

3. Border League. (Границы Лиги)

As well as geographically and culturally separated from their urban counterparts, the border only clubs developed the competition boundaries of the League, which is still contested, and which remains the old organized a competition of Rugby League in the world.

4. Rugby sevens. (Регби)

The border is also the birthplace of the shortened code from seven, which is ironic because Rugby boundaries are traditionally built around forward muscle, not freely go there to play.

The code was invented in 1883, when Melrose butcher and flies a half Weeks Haig proposed a shortened version of the game, as a means of raising money at a local fair. The idea was a resounding success, with Melrose beating Gala in extra time to win the contest, and soon most of the towns on the borders held their annual sevens tournaments in April and may.

So seriously do the residents of the border strip taken in the game, that when in 1983 the victorious French surrendered Melrose sevens winners medals to the local lasses as a sign of love that there was an explosion of indignation in the city. Borderers see the seven winners of the Melrose as the next best thing to a Scottish cap.

The Melrose Cup is the main prize of the Rugby world Cup sevens, and named in honor of this.

They wanted to take on overseas touring sides, drawing with South Africa on two occasions and famously beating an excellent 1984 Australia touring team. They also competed in the Scottish inter-district championship against the Edinburgh area, Glasgow area and the North and Midlands.

In 1995, with the advent of professionalism in Rugby shit decided the professionalization of the southern district command as the border Reivers.

6. Border Reivers. (Границы Reivers)

The border Reivers was one of the four professional sides, shit established in 1996, from the traditional Amateur district sides. The rest were warriors Glasgow, Edinburgh Rugby and Caledonia Reds.

Their appearance was initially treated with some suspicion and derision, but this was due to high debt shit that the axe fell to the Reivers only two years later. In Caledonia Reds suffered the same fate.

The border Reivers was merged into the Edinburgh Rugby in 1998 to form the Edinburgh Reivers. In fact, however, the boundaries of the area was practically disbanded. Edinburgh quietly lowered his Reivers name later.

The creation of the Celtic League in 2001 gave a shit more credible. He rose border Reivers side in 2002, they competed in the Celtic League, Heineken Cup and Challenge Cup. However, teams generally struggled in the League.

The party was disbanded in 2007. In the Reivers took something of the following and their demise was a small scandal. Part of the problem was that while the boundaries and approaches developed in scotlands best Rugby, they dont necessarily have the population to support such a team.
